MMWCon Returns to UCLA from Sept. 14-16

Registration continues for the UCLA Office of Information Technology’s fourth annual Mobility & Modern Web Conference (MMWCon). MMWCON, a unique mobile technology event centered around active learning, strategy sharing, and collaborative experiences, will take place at UCLA’s California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) on September 14-16, 2016.

The first two days of the conference feature sessions in three concurrent tracks: Mobility Toolkit; mHealth and Sensors; and Next Generation Mobile and Data. Wednesday afternoon’s keynote address is presented by UCLA’s Chief Medical Officer for Clinical Research, Dr. Arash Naeim, who will speak about UCLA’s new Center for SMART Health where research teams are collaborating to transform the use of healthcare technology through the use of mobile technology, big data analytics, screening technologies and medical robotics.

The opening keynotes for each day also feature global leaders in education speaking about the impact of technology on learning:

  • Jason Palmer, Deputy Director, Postsecondary Success, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Eric Bonabeau, Ph.D., Dean of Global Affairs, The Minerva Schools at the Keck Graduate Institute (KGI)
UCLA and all University of California campus faculty and staff can take advantage of the UC employee rate of $295, which gives participants access to the entire three-day conference. The regular non-profit rate is $475 and the student rate is $265. For more information and to register, visit the MMWCon website at https://mmwcon.org/.

Become a Common Book Ambassador!

You are invited to participate in UCLA’s Common Book Program by reading this year’s Common Book and participating in a discussion with our first-year students. Over this summer, all incoming first-year freshman and transfer students are given a copy of the 2016-2017 Common Book, Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. By coming together to discuss the book during True Bruin Welcome, students engage in an intellectual and community-building activity that introduces them to the UCLA experience. We invite you to participate in the Common Book Program as an “ambassador,” a representative of the larger university and Los Angeles community who participates in the student-led discussions and helps new students make a connection to your area of expertise at UCLA and beyond. We will offer two Common Book discussions: one for commuter students on Sun., 9/18 and the other for residential students on Wed., 9/21. Ambassadors will be given a copy of the Common Book to read before the discussions, along with dinner provided and a parking pass for those who don’t already have a valid permit. To sign up to be a Common Book Ambassador, please fill out this form by September 12th.
