What: AIDS WALK LOS ANGELES is a 10k fundraising walk to fight HIV/AIDS

Where: Grand Park in Downtown Los Angeles

When: Sunday, October 23, 2016

In its 31 years, AIDS Walk Los Angeles has drawn hundreds of thousands of supporters to walk, and millions more to donate, raising more than $79 million to combat HIV and AIDS. The funds raised at the event remain a vital lifeline that sustains APLA Health’s prevention, care, and advocacy programs for the thousands of men, women, and families affected by the disease in Los Angeles County. Lacy Simkowitz, curatorial assistant at the Cotsen Collection, worked closely with artists featured in The Box Project, helping to organize their commissioned artworks into an exhibition and catalog. From mining the archives to decisions about the exhibition checklist, Simkowitz played a key role in the development of the traveling exhibition. In this gallery talk, she discusses case studies by James Bassler, Ai Kijima, and Cynthia Schira as she shares behind-the-scenes stories about the exhibition planning process.
