Andrea Ghez wins 2020 Noble Prize in Physics

Dr. Andrea Ghez, recently featured in UCLA Staff Assembly Emerging Research Speaker Series, wins the 2020 Noble Prize in Physics. Dr. Ghez shares half of the prize with Reinhard Genzel of UC Berkeley and the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics. The Nobel committee praised them for “the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the centre of our galaxy.”

Watch Dr. Ghez's engaging look into her research and ground-breaking work from last month's Staff Assembly Emerging Research Speaker Series entitled “The Monster at the Heart of our Galaxy.”

Staff Assembly Centennial Reports

As the campus community prepares for the "new normal," Staff Assembly, the organization "for staff, by staff," would like to take a moment to reflect on the many memorable experiences that have been shared during our Centennial Celebrations. Please take a moment to explore the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 Annual Reports as we turn the corner on the second century in UCLA's history.

CUCSA September Quarterly Meeting Updates

The September CUCSA meeting was hosted by UC Irvine. CUCSA is the Council of UC Staff Assemblies, composed of two delegates from each UC Campus. During the first CUCSA meeting of 2020-21 year, there were updates regarding the Staff Advisor to the Regents (STAR) program and information about applying to become a STAR. We heard from various leaders at UCI, and wrapped with information on the upcoming systemwide Engagement Survey (to be launched in 2021). Additionally, CUCSA formed four workgroups for the 2020-21 year:

  • Flexible Work Arrangements
  • Staff Advocacy (focus on compensation)
  • Basic Needs (focus on mental health)
  • Internal Operations (strategic planning for CUCSA and maintaining online platforms)

Each workgroup will be looking to gather information from each campus related to the workgroup topics. If you are interested, email staffassembly@ucla.edu.
