Show Your True Bruin "Service" Value
Participate in UCLA's United Way Campaign
May 1 - 31, 2018

Karen Calderon is a freshman at UCLA and a United Way recipient. She encourages her fellow Bruins to participate in the annual giving campaign.

"People giving to United Way would allow United Way to expand the programs and give more resources to people who need it," said Karen in describing how United Way has impacted her life. "I think that I am a strong individual today, I am able to succeed today," because of United Way.

Calderon encourages others to give, saying "To be a True Bruin you have to uphold certain values, and one of the values that's most important to me is Service...It doesn't end with me being here at UCLA, it ends with whatever my future turns out to be. United Way creates...empowered and resilient people."

See Karen's complete remarks in a video on the UCLA/United Way Campaign webpage.

The campaign financial goal is $200,000. To date the campaign contributions are at $71,637. Show your True Bruin "Service" value by making a tax deductible donation via payroll deduction or credit card before the campaign ends on May 31, 2018.

Vote on Creating a New Neighborhood Council

Neighborhood Councils can be a powerful force for progress or stagnation in the community. A council can encourage affordable housing development, or insist on so many height, parking, and aesthetic requirements that only a few units can be built. They can encourage nightlife, or work to ensure that no establishments are able to offer dancing, live music, pool tables, or happy hours. They can pave the way for bike lanes, pedestrian plazas, and popular fast casual restaurants, or they can make it very difficult for them to come into Westwood.

This year, Westwood Forward, a coalition of students, business leaders, faculty, staff and Westwood residents have brought forward a ballot resolution that would split the existing Westwood Neighborhood Council in two, allowing the area around UCLA and Westwood Village to be self-governed. To reach your own informed opinion on the proposal and for voter information, you can visit the North Westwood Neighborhood Council web page on the EmpowerLA web portal.

It is especially important to note that everyone 17 or older who lives, works, goes to school, or otherwise has a substantial interest in Westwood is eligible to vote, regardless of whether you're a citizen or are otherwise registered to vote. You can vote in person at the John Wooden Center or at the Westwood Recreation center at 1350 S Sepulveda on May 22 from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m.

If you don't live in Westwood, you can identify as a "work" stakeholder and then, for "Stakeholder's Qualifying Address," you can put any valid UCLA address.
